Monday night football has its own feel about it. Different tempo. Different edge. And for a newly promoted side still finding its feet in VPL1, it presents a genuine measure of where you’re at.
Eltham Redbacks head to the Veneto Club this Monday (8:30pm) to face FC Bulleen Lions in Round 3, looking to build on a landmark result.
Last Friday’s 2–0 win over Brunswick Juventus was the club’s first-ever VPL1 victory. It followed a narrow 2–1 opening-round loss to Melbourne Victory Youth, where the Redbacks were competitive throughout and arguably unlucky not to take something from the game.
Two rounds in, the numbers are solid. One win, one loss. Three goals scored, two conceded. A positive goal difference and a place just outside the top six on the ladder.
Bulleen sit just behind Eltham on the table, also on three points from two matches. They edged Port Melbourne 2–1 last week, with Phin Harbinson striking after just one minute and Connor Bell scoring what proved the winner in the 38th. It was a necessary response after their Round 1 defeat, and they’ll view Monday as another opportunity to build momentum.
There’s also context around this one. Bulleen have made no secret of their ambition to climb out of VPL1 and return to the top tier. That expectation brings pressure. At home, under lights, they’ll want control. They’ll want authority.
The Veneto Club’s synthetic surface has traditionally been an advantage for the Lions. But Eltham trains and plays on a synthetic pitch week in, week out. That usual edge is largely neutralised. This won’t be foreign territory.
From a Redbacks perspective, the platform has been laid by defensive structure and discipline. The midfield balance has allowed the side to stay compact without losing attacking threat, while the front third showed greater composure and efficiency against Brunswick.
The next step is consistency.
A win on Monday would move Eltham to six points from three games – genuine top-half form in the early rounds of a highly competitive league. Even more importantly, it would signal that this group isn’t just here to survive.
Bulleen will test them. They move the ball quickly and carry a threat in wide areas. But Eltham’s response to adversity in Round 1 and their control in Round 2 suggest a team growing into the division rather than being overwhelmed by it.
Round 3.
Veneto Club.
8:30 pm under lights.
Another chance to prove this level suits the Redbacks.
Up the ‘Backs.
